How did I get here? 🤔
I was working for a tutoring company, having taken the job after leaving a college position. I wanted to stay in education, but working in a local school just wasn’t for me. I also had a bigger goal: Overemployment—working two remote jobs to maximize my income. So, when I finally landed a fully remote full-time job after months of searching, I jumped at it. 💻
Sure, the salary was lower than what I was used to, but no commute seemed like a fair trade-off… or so I thought. Once I was fully trained, I started looking for a second work-from-home job, but nothing seemed better.
Conventional wisdom says: Stay at a job for 3-5 years before moving on. I was creeping up on the 2-year mark, itching for a way out when—boom—a dream offer fell into my lap.
Except it wasn’t a dream. It was a nightmare. 🚩
Let’s count the red flags, shall we?
đźš© 1. No Negotiation on Compensation
They refused to budge on my salary. $75,000. Take it or leave it. Even worse? The benefits sucked.
đźš© 2. No Time Off Before Starting
I always like to take a week off between jobs to reset my routine. They promised they’d “do anything” to accommodate me—except give me time off or more money. So… not anything.
đźš© 3. The Interview Was a Warning in Disguise
My interviewer was enthusiastic but also seemed like he was trying to sell me the job while secretly warning me. 🚨 I should’ve listened.
đźš© 4. Instant Regret
After one day, I knew I had made a mistake. But I kept pushing forward because I had dreams of homeownership in Massachusetts. 🏡
🚩 5. My Biggest Fan Wasn’t the Boss Who Mattered
My direct boss loved me, but I was ruffling feathers with the owners—and their opinions were the only ones that counted.
đźš© 6. They Wanted Me to Ignore the Unignorable
The biggest mistake? I cared. About things they wanted me to ignore.
🚩🚩🚩 7. They Weren’t Paying Their Workers 🚩🚩🚩
And that, my friends, was the final straw.
Lesson learned? Red flags don’t disappear—they multiply. 🚨 Trust your gut, negotiate hard, and don’t let desperation push you into a bad deal.
